Sie ist vor allem für ihre Rolle in den Filmen Set It Off, John Q und Diary of a Mad Black Woman bekannt. Ihre letzte Filmrolle war in Tyler Perry's For Colored Girls (2010), als die misshandelte Frau Crystal. Elise ist viermalige Gewinnerin des NAACP Image Award.
